The Shirley & Marion Scholes
Jayhawk Scholarship
The Scholes Jayhawk Scholarship Fund was established in 2019 to financially assist graduates of Council Grove High School wishing to pursue a college degree at the University of Kansas. The scholarship is in memory of Shirley and Marion Scholes. Marion was born and raised in Council Grove and graduated from Council Grove High School in 1944. As a returning World War II Navy veteran, he enrolled at KU where he met Shirley. Shirley was a micropaleontologist working on her master’s degree in geology, a female pioneer in a male-dominated major. She was also one of the first female teaching assistants in the KU geology department and Marion literally fell in love with his teacher. They were married and after Marion graduated with his degree in petroleum geology, he went to work for the Ohio Oil Company (now known as Marathon Oil Company). While with Marathon, Shirley and Marion moved eleven times to five states over his 34-year career but always remained steadfast and loyal Jayhawk fans. Though they retired to Massachusetts, they had a special place in their heart for Council Grove and returned many times to visit family and friends. In order, preferences are given to current CGHS graduating students, female students, students with financial need, students with a science major.
